Francis married Sarah Ann Bell on September 11, 1845, in Forsyth, Georgia. They lived in Hall County, Georgia and had two children, Monteray and John Francis Cain.
On November 25, 1863, he was a prisoner of war, imprisoned at Missionary Ridge having been transferred there from Rock Island, Illinois, and he was exchanged on February 25, 1865. He was a private in the Confederate 46 Georgia Infantry, Company F, and he enlisted in 1862.
After the Civil War, he left his family in Georgia, coming to Tuolumne County to work in the gold mines.
By 1900, he was a County hospital and Almshouse patient. There was only a brief announcement of his death in the local newspaper.
