Her brother Vern Lauder died in California in 1985, and her half sister, Rosalie, died in 1978 in Michigan. Her half sister, Lorraine Steiner, died in November 2004, also in Michigan.
She was married to Ralph M. Depoy in St. Joseph County, Michigan in 1933. That marriage was ended by divorce.
Her marriage in 1940 to Orland Joseph Atkinson would also end in divorce. Although they remained married for many years, they soon lived apart and eventually divorced in the 1970's. Kathleen continued to live in South Bend and Orland in lived in the Chicago area. Orland who was born July 17, 1911 in Grand County, Indiana was a son of Alva J. Atkinson and Bertha Oren. Orland died in 2010.
Kathleen and Orland both worked at the Bendix Home Appliance company in South Bend with
Jack B. Kubisch who was a manager. When the Bendix Home Appliance closed Jack Kubisch, George Wrasse and Kathleen Atkinson formed a corporation called Great Northern Distributors, Inc. and each of them were officers/owners of Great Northern Distributors, Inc. which remained in existence until 1988.
However, Jack Kubisch would sell his interest in Great Northern when he became U.S. Assistant Secretary of State and Ambassador to Greece appointed by President John Kennedy. During his Foreign Service career, Kubisch served in embassies in Brazil, France, Sri Lanka, Mexico and Greece. Despite his long and very distinguished service to his country, he remained friends with his South Bend roots and when in town would be sure to visit.
Kathleen never had children, but loved animals and made sure the birds and ducks were fed from her back yard. She always had a cat who she treated as her "baby."
