Mary Hawes Taylor was born near Pomery, Washington, on August 23, 1882, the daughter of William Samuel Taylor and Sarah Ellen Holland. Mary grew up in the Portland, Oregon, area, where her parents moved their family in about 1890, so their children would be closer to school. She married Sylvester Barnes in Portland on July 2, 1901. They had two daughters: Vesta Mary and Frances Ruth.
After she and Ves divorced, Mary took in boarders, at one time keeping house for her brother Ed and his younger son. In about 1938, Mary moved to Vallejo, CA, where her father, sister Frances and brother Bill lived. In about 1957, she moved to Napa, CA, to live near her younger daughter. She died there at age 89, of heart failure.
