David John Chapman, 65, of La Grande died of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis on Sunday at Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise, Idaho.
Dave was born in Corvallis to Earl LaVerne Chapman and Tennie Steele Chapman. He was raised and schooled in Corvallis, graduating from Corvallis High School in 1964.
Dave went to La Grande in 1966 to attend Eastern Oregon State College, switching from pre-veterinary medicine to a biology major, hoping to work for the Fish and Game Department. Always active, he rode bulls and bareback, and clowned for rodeos, while later he was header on a roping team with Greg Duff and participated in cuttings with two of his horses.
He worked for Power Transmission Products, and later bought that business and created Logger Supply and Four Seasons Fly Shoppe. He loved the outdoors, always fishing, rafting, mountain biking and hunting. Dave married twice, first to Nanci Goodwin, then Suzann Schoenmoser, each ending in divorce.
Dave leaves behind many fond memories in the hearts of those who knew him. He held on to his Christian faith through the end, looking forward to his future with the Lord in heaven.
He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his sons, Benjamin John Chapman of Brisbane, Australia, Justin Campbell of San Francisco, Calif., and Tyson Schoenmoser, also of San Francisco; sister, Diana Joan Chapman Ballard of Harrisburg; and one grandchild.
Dave chose to be cremated, with no service planned.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Retha Mae Shirley Nursing Scholarship Fund at www.ohsu.edu/son/giving/enotes-0403.shtml.
