He first married Lovella Hicks Oney at the home of H.H. Allen. Lovella was the daughter of Zachariah Oney and Sarah Hicks. Lovella Oney died on December 31, 1912.
Riley Shepherd married January 2, 1913 to Dona Shepherd. Dona was the daughter of William (Brushy Bill) Shepherd and Elizabeth Hale. Riley Shepherd died April 2, 1946. Dona Shepherd died March 9, 1981 at the home of her daughter in Warsaw, Indiana. Both Riley and Dona are buried at Brushy Bill Shepherd cemetery on the Brushy Fork of the Licking River in Magoffin County, Kentucky.
