The dead body of a stranger was found in a houseboat near William's Ferry on Saturday morning. While passing along the road near the point where the boat was located, Sidney Lane, John T. Lane, and James V. Hyatt noticed a disagreeable stench which was so strong that they investigated the cause which lead to the discovery of a dead body of a stranger, who had probably been dead four or five days.

The man was apparently 37 years old, weighted about 160 pounds, was five feet 10 inches in height and had a red beard. He had been traveling alone and in the houseboat were found a supply of provisions, a Winchester rifle, a mandolin and a pocket book containing $163. In the pocketbook was a scrap of paper upon which was written "This belongs to Freddie Gehre, Crown Point, Lake County, Indiana".

Among some papers found in the clothing of the deceased was a summons or notice in a divorce case of Lizzie Gehre vrs. August Gehre, Lake County, Indiana. Their was also a receipt for tuition for a course of instruction in a Barber School in Cincinnati and several receipts for room rent and shop rent in Cincinnati, all in the name of Albert Gehre.

Dr. Mayhew, the corner, was sent for and an inquest was held with the following jury: George W. Cross; Henry M. Allen; H.H. Crozier; Sidney Lane; John T. Lane; & James V. Hyatt. The corner's jury returned the following verdict: "Cause of death unknown but supposed to be from heart failure, natural causes".

The corner purchased a lot in Maple Ridge Cemetery and procured a zinc lined casket, so that if here after the relatives should wish to move the body it can be done.
