Gerald M. Burkey, 83 of 1238 Vermont known with his longtime involvement with Boy Scouting, died at 1:45 AM Monday February 12, 1997 in Blessing Hospital. Born August 31, 1913 in Mount Sterling. Mr. Burkey was a son of Wilson and Josie Maservey Burkey. Mr. Burkey had been employed by Master Tank and Welding retiring in 1978.
A 1932 graduate of Quincy Senior High School, he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps, working in Washington and Oregon. In 1940 he joined the Army Air Corps, serving at Scott Air Force Base and in the South Pacific, earning the rank of Technical Sergeant.
Active in the Saukee Area Council 141 Boy Scouts of America for many years, he was well known for making walking sticks that were awarded to Scouts and volunteers as recognition for their accomplishments. His sticks were presented to President Ronald Regan, Illinois Gov. Jim Thompson and Sandy McDonnell, national President of the Boy Scouts of America in 1985.
Mr. Burkey served as a Cubmaster, Scoutmaster, Webelos leader, District Committee member, Troop Committee member, Scouting Coordinator and Roundtable Ccommissioner. He received the Virgil Honor of the Order of the Arrow as well as the Silver Beaver, and three Woodbadge beads. He also attended one World Jamboree, two National Jamborees and the Philmont High Adventure twice.
Survivors include a son Alan, and sister Winnifred Brown, a niece Mrs. Howard (Kathryn) Dewell, all of Quincy, and two great nephews, Donald Boden of Payson and Jim Dewell of Quincy.
Service will be conducted at 1:30 PM Wednesday in the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home by the Rev. George Tomko. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 pm tonight in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Boy Scouts of America, Fox District 2235 Oak, Quincy, Il 62301
