From the Times Journal dated May 22, 1947:
A blast from a 16 gauge shotgun fired through a glass door at the home of Royce Grider, in the Hayes Chapel Community, proved fatal to Van Roe Compton, 25, WW II veteran.
Immediately after the shooting, Grider came to Jamestown and surrendered himself to Deputy Sheriff W. J. Dunbar. Grider was placed in the Russell County Jail.
Grider told the officers that Compton was attempting to force his way into the Grider home when he fired his shotgun. The full charge from the shotgun blast entered Compton's chest and blood was spattered over the outside of the door, the door knob, the porch floor and on the outside wall.∼Parents were; John L Compton, Antha Grant
