Donald W. Knopf, formerly of Peoria, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011, at the home of his daughter in Fresno, Calif.

Born to Wayne and Gladys Noakes Knopf, he married Dorothy J. Hudson on Dec. 24, 1942, in San Antonio, Texas. She and a son, Donald K. Knopf, preceded him in death.

Surviving are his daughter, Linda "Lindy" (Chris) Manson, and two granddaughters, Suzanne Sprenger and Whitney Knopf.

Don grew up in Emporia, Kan., where he attended Emporia High School and graduated with honors. He was a member of Boy Scout Troop 153 and became an Eagle Scout in 1936. He was a member of Witan, a group of young men who, as older Boy Scouts, formed a men's organization devoted to the ideals of character, fellowship and service.

Don attended Kansas State Teachers College, now Emporia State University, from 1941 to 1942. He was a member of Delta chapter of Sigma Tau Gamma and Kansas Beta chapter of Kappa Mu Epsilon, honorary mathematics fraternity.

On Sept. 4, 1942, Don enlisted in the United States Army Air Forces. He was an instructor pilot in basic and advanced flight schools in Texas. He was discharged from the Army Air Force Reserves in 1946, with the rank of captain.

He attended Kansas State University from 1946 to 1948 and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering. He was a member of Kansas Beta chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon, national mathematics honorary society, Rho chapter of Pi Tau Sigma, mechanical engineering honor society and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

From 1948 until his retirement in 1985, Don worked at Caterpillar Inc. He was research technical director in the development of the first commercially successful truck engine family. Later he was an emissions control manager involved with product safety and environmental controls.
