William "Bill" Robert Bailey, of Charleston, widower of Pinckney B. Bailey, entered into eternal rest January 15, 2012.
William was born on Edisto Island, SC on August 7, 1914, the son of Gertrude Stevens and William Charles Bailey.
He graduated from Edisto High School and Clemson University in 1936 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and a rank of 2nd Lt. in the ROTC. After graduation, he returned to Edisto and ran the family business.
Mr. Bailey was called to active duty right after Pearl Harbor and served in Bomb Disposal in the Army Ordinance Corps. He was discharged in 1946 as a Lt. Colonel.
After World War II, he went to work for Lazare Kaplan & Sons, diamond cutters and merchants in New York City. They sent him to Antwerp, Belgium for training to manage the Ponce Diamond Works in Puerto Rico from 1946-1953. After returning to Charleston, he was Gas Sales Manager for S.C.E.& G. until he retired in 1979.
Bill was active in the Sales and Marketing Club of Charleston, the Southeastern Gas Association and Junior Achievement of Greater Charleston. He was an active member of Lions International for over 50 years, serving in numerous capacities, including District Governor and President of the State Eye Bank. Mr. Bailey was a life member of the Jacksonboro Lodge # 206 of the Ancient Free Masons. He was an active member of St. James Episcopal Church since 1953 and served in many areas of Parish and Diocesan work. He was Jr. and Sr. Warden of St. James and on the founding board of Bishop Gadsden. Bill worked very hard to see it become a reality.
He is survived by his three daughters, Mary Bailey King, Ann Bailey King, Trudy Bailey Sease and her husband Earl: grandchildren; Anna Bailes (John) and their children Noah, Dylan and Drew; Trey King and his children Glynn, Alden and Bailey; Les Sease (Tammy) and their children Annmarie and Matthew; Suzanne Roberts (Travis) and their children Brandon and Logan.
He was predeceased by one sister, Gertrude Bailey Woods.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral services, January 19, 2012 at 11:00 AM at St. James Episcopal Church on Camp Road, James Island. Interment will follow in the Churchyard.
