Raymond Gene McCoy, 66, of Parkersburg went peacefully into God's hands on Friday (Nov. 11, 2011), surrounded by his family at the Cleveland Clinic following complications associated with cancer.

Ray was born Dec. 27, 1944, in Clarksburg, W.Va., to the late Mason and Geneva (Tyler) McCoy. After graduating from Salem High School in 1962, he served in the United States Air Force from 1962 to 1966. He was stationed at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada and Elmendorf Air Force Base in Alaska. He earned a business degree from Salem College, married the woman who he always said was the best thing to ever happen to him, raised three daughters and was devoted to seven grandchildren who were the delight of his life.

Ray loved music, especially Blues. He enjoyed cooking, his specialty being a family favorite which came to be known as Sunday Soup. He loved to sing and had a beautiful tenor. He was the life of the party, loved to laugh and had a mischievous sense of humor. He was a beautiful dancer and loved to dance with his wife. Ray enjoyed history, with a particular interest in the Civil War. He made many trips to Gettysburg, Pa., over the years, taking each grandchild.

Serving the Lord was important to Ray. He participated in evangelical work, children's and youth ministries, and served on the finance board of his church. He never failed to help those in need around him. He felt a special mission in life to feed people, often taking fresh vegetables or hot food to senior shut-ins or cooking dinner for veterans groups. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, and the DAV where he worked for many years.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Sandra J. (Smith) McCoy of Parkersburg; children Melissa McCoy (Todd Hickman) of Upper Arlington, Ohio, Melinda (Tony) Hapney of Little Hocking, Ohio, and Amanda (Jamie) Deems of Vienna, W.Va.; grandchildren Tyler, Olivia and Eden Deems, Mackenzie and Max Hapney, and Claire and Emma Hickman; extended family.

Besides his parents, he is predeceased by two sisters and special brother Samuel A. McCoy.

A celebration of life service will be held Wednesday (Nov. 16) at 11 a.m. at Leavitt Funeral Home in Parkersburg. Interment will follow at Evergreen North with Rev. Jim Mike Ward officiating. Friends may call on the family at the funeral home from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm on Tuesday (Nov. 15), and prior to the service from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Memorial donations may be made in his honor to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, The Cleveland Hope Lodge, or the Gettysburg Foundation.
