"ALFRED, CHARLES J. Confederate veteran died at his home on Polk Creek Wednesday. He was in his 74th year. Survived by wife and four sons, Perry G., Frank and Harry Alfred of Weston, and Ralph Alfred of Clarksburg. Services at the Polk Creek M. E. Church. Mr. Alfred was born in Albemarle county, Va. and came to this section in early life."

"Died Wednesday, October 18th, at age of 73 years, 2 months and 22 days, buried on the 19th. He was eight years old, when he came with his father, Charles J. Alfred, to Lewis county in the year 1846 from Albemarle county, Va. His widow and four sons survive.... An older brother, James Alfred, and four sisters, Mrs. Turner, Mrs. Waggy, Mrs. Montgomery and Mrs. Hoover, all living and residing in this county, survive."
