Swedish dancer and teacher although he spent most of his career in Russia. He studied at the Royal Swedish Ballet School from 1829 and then with Bournoville in Copenhagan. In 1837 in Stockholm he was made a premier danseur and danced with Marie Taglioni. However in 1841 he went to St. Petersburg and after a sucessful debut in 'La Gitana' he was made a premier danseur there. He remained at the Imperial Theatres until 1869, creating roles in several ballets by Perrot. But it is as a teacher that he is best remembered. When he retired from the stage he became cheif teacher at the Imperial Ballet School, where his pupils included the famous names of Kchessinska, Preobrajenska, Pavlova, Karsavina, Nikolai Legat and P. Gerdt. He was one of the most important figures in the developing of the Russian School of dancing. He often accompanied his own classes playing a violin.
