The Livingston Journal, Livingston, Ala., 08 Dec 1882, Fri, page 2

The Meridian Mercury of Sunday contained a account of the robbery and murder of Maj. J. G. Coats, at McDowell's Station, this county. We have learned since, that there was no murder nor robbery in the case. It is unfortunately true that Maj. Coats was killed last Friday night, but the killing was accidental. He was run over by a train of cars, at Demopolis. The deceased was a prominent and esteemed citizen, and his untimely death is a subject of general regret.
