Isaac was a well digger, a distiller of whiskey, and a farmer.
He was a private in Company B of the 38th NC Infantry CSA. His father, William, was in the same company with him. His service records sometimes are mistakenly labeled as J. M. Atwood.
He enlisted on 16 Oct 1861 at Yadkinville, Yadkin, NC. He was wounded in the arm 26 June 1862 at Mechanicsville. He was captured at Petersburg 2 Apr 1865 and sent to Hart's Island, New York Harbor. He was released 21 June 1865. His service records list him as being 5'6" with light complexion, sandy hair, and blue eyes.
He applied for his soldier's pension on 3 June 1901. It states he is 56 years old and a resident at Cross Roads Church post office in Yadkin County. It says he was wounded in the arm just below the elbow at Mechanicsville and that the ball went through his arm and lodged in his side and also caused his fingers to be stiff. His arm is so affected from the effects of the ball that it is but of little service to him.
He applied for admission to the North Carolina Soldiers' Home on 24 Dec 1903. It states that he is age 59. It states he is a farmer. It lists his relative as E.F. Atwood.
