MANITOWOC, Wis. - Francis X. Wheeler, 76, of 2505 Grand Ave, Manitowoc, Wis., died Friday evening, Jan. 13, 2012, surrounded by his family at Shady Lane Nursing Care Center, Manitowoc.

He was born on Dec. 16, 1935, on the family farm in Powers, son of the late George and Margaret (Dugre) Wheeler. He attended North Central High School in Powers.

On July 6, 1957, he married the former Frances (Jean) Zawada at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Schaffer. Fran began his work experience in Manitowoc with Wisconsin Fuel and Light in 1961 and in 1977 he received his certificate in welding from L.T.C. He also worked for various home builders in the Manitowoc area. Fran was also employed with Burger Boat Company where he began his career as a welder and continued his career at Manitowoc Ship Building Sheetmetal Shop. Fran retired in December of 1995 with Consumer Steel Company.

Survivors include his wife, Jean of Manitowoc; one son and daughter-in-law, David and Susan Wheeler of Sheboygan, Wis.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Janice and Bob Bauer of Manitowoc, Kathy and Bill Miller of Manitowoc, Julie and Chuck Bornemann of Whitelaw, Wis.; nine grandchildren, Edward, Megan, Gregory, Hannah and Clare Bauer, Nathan, Andrew and Aubrie Miller, Charles (CJ) Bornemann; one sister, Alice Becker of Manitowoc; two brothers-in-law and three sisters-in-law, Chester and Patricia Zawada of Downers Grove, Ill., Dennis and Maxine Zawada of Bark River, Pauline Domine of Jackson, Wis. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive.

Fran was also preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Robert and Rose Wheeler, George and Emily Wheeler and Stewart Wheeler; one infant sister, Ethel; one sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Daniel Mangin; and two brothers-in-law, Allen Becker and Joseph Zawada.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today, Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2012, at St. Francis of Assisi on Grand Ave. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Richard Klingeisen with burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery, Manitowoc.

The family greeted relatives and friends from 5-7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 16, at The Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc. A prayer service concluded the visitation at 7 p.m. The visitation will continue today, Tuesday, Jan. 17, at The Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc from 9:30 a.m. until the morning prayers at 10:30 a.m.

A special Thank You to Shady Lane Nursing Care Center for the wonderful and compassionate care given to Fran. Also a special thank you to Fr. Dick Klingeisen for his many visits to the nursing home.

Fran was a loving husband and a good father who loved and shared his Catholic faith with all he knew.

He loved cutting trees for firewood and his many woodworking projects, making keepsakes for family and friends.

His interest in Chicago Northwestern Railroad and steam engines was passed on to his son David as they shared in that common interest for many years. Fran loved his grandchildren and tried to instill in his children the importance and value of visiting elderly distant family and friends. We love you and will miss you.
