Fred L. (Penny) Mueller, 72, of 538 North Jackson street, died Wednesday evening in Ionia County Memorial hospital.
He was a lifelong resident of Ionia and was employed at Pere Marquette car shop in Ionia 11 years, then with the Saginaw car shop until 1945. He was later employed with William Morris and Sons three years.
Mr. Mueller had been in ill health since 1959. He was born May 24, 1893 in Ionia, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Mueller and was married at Big Rapids May 21, 1927, to Mariette Fries.
Mr. Mueller served with United States Navy during World War I and was a member of the National Guard prior to the war.
He is survived by his wife, Mariette, one daughter, Janice of Ann Arbor, one half brother, Carl Miller, and a stepmother, Mrs. Bertha Miller, both of Grand Rapids.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at St. John Lutheran church. The body will be at Boynton funeral home until time of service and the coffin will remain closed at the church. Officiating will be the Rev. Marvin Hueller and burial will be at Balcom cemetery.

Fred was raised by his grandparents Woodrich. Their daughter Fredericka "Reeka" married Fred Miller/Mueller Sr in 1889, and passed in 1893 after giving birth.
Fred Jr was reported as Fred Woodrich in 1900. He later was reported as Fred Mueller, and was living with his grandma and an aunt in 1910, and with the aunt and her family in 1920. Fredericka (Ammon) Woodrich was his guardian and biological grandmother. According to his obituary, his father lived on and married a Bertha.
