Dennis Pitcher, the father of my husband, and grandfather to my son, died today. His wife, Joy, and most of his children were able to be there.

Dennis was born to Austin Pitcher and Myrtle Plowman in Smithfield, Utah. He lived in Cache Valley all his life. He met Joy Jorgensen from Logan and they both fell in love with one another. They married in February 26, 1945 and acted like honeymooners for the next 60+ years together. They had four sons, and two daughters, all of whom loved him very much.

I met Dennis and Joy when I was dating their son, Ken. He teased me right from the start! He loved verbal bantering with people and they loved to do it with him.

Dennis was a mink rancher most of his life, first in the Brigham City area and later in Smithfield. I was always amazed that someone who worked in such a stinky, messy job (to me) could always look as if he had donned brand new clothes. Never a speck. Probably because he would not allow it!

Lewis Dennis Pitcher began his life May 19, 1924 in Smithfield, Utah and passed away January 18, 2012 surrounded by his wife, children, and grandchildren. He was welcomed home by his parents, Austin & Myrtle Plowman Pitcher, his sisters Roma Leatham & Erma Bradley, brother Harold Pitcher and son Kenneth Pitcher.

Dennis lived in Smithfield most of his life and attended Cache County Schools. He enjoyed being a mink farmer for nearly 50 years. He started his own ranch and along with his loving wife and 6 children had a very successful business. He taught his children the value of work and responsibility and also how to enjoy a job well done. He took great pride in everything he did, never shirking a duty. He had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed a good visit. He could tease and be teased with the best. He loved his home and enjoyed working to keep everything in top notch condition. He was a kind man with a kind heart. His children and grandchildren thought the world of him.

He married Esther Joy Jorgensen on February 26, 1945. They were together 67 years. They had 6 children, Janice Anderson (Ned), Kenneth Pitcher (deceased) (Pat), Dale Leatham (Noreen), Mary Rogers, Terry Pitcher (Janet), and John Pitcher (Treena).

He had 22 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. He was an Elder in the church.

Services will be held at the Smithfield 2nd Ward (675 West 200 North) on Monday, January 23rd at 12 noon. A viewing will be held on Sunday from 5 – 7 pm at Nelson Funeral Home of Smithfield (85 South Main St.) and also from 10:30 – 11:30 prior to the funeral service. Interment will take place at the Smithfield Cemetery.
