Civil War Union Army officer. He entered Union Army service on July 15, 1861 as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company G, 22nd Indiana Volunteer Infantry. Promoted to Captain and commander on July 9, 1862, he served in that duty until April 25, 1863. On that date he was transferred to the 44th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and was promoted to Major. Promoted again to Lieutenant Colonel on July 22, 1863, he was transferred back to the 22nd Indiana. He led the regiment through the end of that war, receiving a commission of Colonel on February 6, 1864. However, he was never mustered in at that rank, and was honorably mustered out as a Lieutenant Colonel on January 9, 1865.
