Eva Myrtle Williams was born into a farming family on February 22nd, 1893. Her parents, Thomas Lonzo Williams (1862-1926) and Mattie [Martha] Lee Stewart (1872-1959), raised her on their family's farm in Kansas, Walker Co., Alabama, along with her seven brothers and sisters. By 1900, her parents had been married for ten years and had four children; in 1910, they stated they were the parents of eight children, although only seven were living in the home, along with Levi E. Williams, age 54, the elder brother of Thomas Lonzo Williams, also a farmer. Eva's paternal grandmother, Eliza Hogan, age 66, was also in the home. She and her two sons (Thomas and Levi) had all been born in Georgia. Eva, her mother and siblings were all born in Alabama.
At the age of 16, young "Mirtie" (Eva Myrtle's nickname) married William Richard Tierce on December 19th, 1909 in Walker Co., Alabama. Her new husband was a coal miner for Dodd Clark Coal Company in Kansas, Alabama and the happy couple lived in the town where he was employed. They were blessed with five sons over the next ten years. They were:
William Carlos, b.Feb 25, 1911
Glen, b.June 17, 1912
Lloyd Elbert, b.Nov 24, 1914
Stanley Albert, b.Aug 5, 1917 and
Leonard E., b.Sep 21, 1920.
By 1930, when the U.S.Census was taken (on April 15th), the family had moved to Simpson, McIntosh Co., Oklahoma where William had again taken up farming with his three eldest sons working as "farm laborers", the term used by enumerators for family members working on the the family farm without wages. In 1935, they were in rural Atoka Co., Oklahoma. The family would move one last time, between 1940 and 1942 to Oregon, where they would resettle in the Willamette Valley, except for William Carlos, who had married and was living with his wife and children in Tulare Co., California. Glen had also married, in 1932, to Minnie Lee Brown, and they had two daughters. They initially stayed on a farm in the Harrisburg area of Linn County, Oregon, and then he bought a farm in Turner, Marion Co., Oregon, where they would stay until the end of their days. Lloyd, Leonard and Stanley all served in the military during World War II and, thankfully, all returned to the United States alive. Prior to the War, Stanley had been staying with Glen and his family, helping on the farm. Stanley was discharged Sep 29, 1945 and returned to Oregon to live. He married Marie Jewel Whitehurst, they had children of their own and they lived in the town of Marion, Marion Co., Oregon. Both Lloyd and Leonard returned to Oregon as well, living in Marion County, Oregon for the remainder of their days. I do not know if either married.
Parents William and Eva "Mirtie" Tierce also relocated one last time, to Jefferson, Marion Co., Oregon, in the early 1940's, living on a farm. William retired from farming as his health and his age began to take their toll. He lived for ten years with renal disease and, eventually, cancer and heart failure. The final ten days of his life were spent in the hospital in Albany until he passed from this life on July 12th, 1958. Mirtie laid her beloved husband to rest at Willamette Memorial Park in Albany, Linn County, Oregon. She followed her husband in death on February 22nd, 1964 at the age of 71 yrs. Her 54th Angel Day is on February 22, 2018. Her remains were interred next to her dear husband's, but she is with him in Heaven, along with their sons and other Loved Ones, forever.
