Enlisted in Company D, Illinois 139th Infantry Regiment on June 1, 1864. Mustered out on Oct. 28, 1864 at Peoria, Illinois. His residence at enlistment was given as Galesburg, Illinois.

John Henry Curtis, second son of Henry Wilke Curtis and his wife, Margaret Rhodes, was born on a farm in Warren county, Illinois, January 2, 1847. When he was seventeen years old he enlisted in the Union Army in the Civil war.
He was married to Apoline Evans in 1869. They came to Avoca in 1870 and lived in Shelby county until 1902 when they moved to Chanute, Kansas, where he died August 2, 1918.
He leaves a multitude of friends and his wife and two sons, Frank Charles Curtis of Dodge City, Kansas, and William Hart Curtis of Torrington, Wyoming, and two grand children, Allan Smith Curtis and Frances Mildred Curtis, to cherish his memory.
The body was brot to Avoca Monday morning accompanied by Frank and Hart Curtis, Mrs. Curtis, wife and mother, being unable at this time to undertake the journey.
Services were held at the home in Chanute and burial was in Avoca. The funeral party going direct from the depot to the cemetery accompanied by his sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Hart of this city and Messers. Priester, True, Karstens, Schmidt, Norton and Beymer as pall bearers and a number of old family friends.
A great hearted man has gone; many of his associates have reason to remember his sympathy, council and generosity. He was never too busy nor too poor to help a friend.
