Mary was a strong willed individual who carried on at the death of her husband in 1872, left with four children. With no marketable skills of her own, her two oldest sons earned wages as meat butchers, her husband's trade. Her youngest son George Robbin, was bonded out, and Mary kept house and cared for her youngest child, 3 year old Lillie. In her old age Mary lived with Lillie and her family, and Lillie's children came to know their grandmother well.
