OLYMPIA — Vida Crowe, 84, a resident of Klipsan Beach, died at St Peter's Hospital in Olympia on Jan. 4, 2012. Vida was born on Oct. 3, 1927, in Formoso, Kan., and moved to Lander, Wyo., as a child where she had a porcupine as a pet and rode a horse to school. Later the family moved to Portland, where she graduated from high school. Vida met her future husband, Carl, when she was teaching dance at Arthur Murray.

The couple had one son, and moved to Washougal. While living there, Vida was the secretary for the First Christian Church in Camas. Shortly after the death of her husband, Vida and her mother moved to the Peninsula.

Vida lived on the Peninsula for the next 30-plus years of her life. Vida loved to paint, play the harmonica, garden, knit, sew and bird watch (including doing the bird count each year). One year a pair of blue jays wintered in her yard and bird watchers came from near and far! Vida was a member of Eastern Star and was a worthy matron in both Camas and Ilwaco. Vida also greatly loved her dog, Rufus. Despite Vida's efforts, Rufus' only trick is knowing how to chase a ball. Vida was a positive person of strong Christian faith and enjoyed her involvement in the Peninsula Baptist Church and hosted a prayer group at her home that met weekly. Vida considered her friends at the church to be a part of her family and they provided much needed help for her as she grew older and struggled to remain independent, which was very important to her. Vida was a wonderful, caring mother with a good sense of humor and the ability to make others happier because they knew her. Vida will be missed, but not forgotten, by her family and friends.
