His obituary was published in the May 30, 1901 edition of the Waynesburg Republican:
"William S. Hunnell died at his home in Washington, D.C., Thursday evening, May 23, at 8:30 p.m., of consumption. Deceased was 40 years of age and was born and reared in Waynesburg, being a son of the late Morgan H. Hunnell, deceased. He was formerly engaged in the jewelry business here, but went to Washington City about fifteen years ago, where he held a position in the Interior Department of the government and was united in marriage to Miss Kate Campbell, the daughter of Wm. Campbell, who was the first editor of the Greene County Democrat. His wife and three children survive, as also his mother, Mrs. M. H. Hunnell, one brother, Dawson Hunnell, and two sisters, Mrs. A. B. Patton and Miss Maria Hunnell, of this place, to whom the sympathy of many friends is extended in their bereavement. Mr. Hunnell was well and favorably known here and the announcement of his death caused a feeling of sadness among a large number of acquaintances. The interment took place at Washington City."
