("The Avoca Journal" dated Sep. 15, 1898 on p. 1)

Calvin Hale Brown was born in Habbardston, Mass., on June 3, 1822, and died at his residence in Knox township, September 8, 1898, aged seventy-six years, three months and five days. His remains were laid by the side of those of his sister who preceded him about seven years ago, and both lie sleeping in the Avoca cemetery. His only surviving relative is his brother, J. R. Brown. His adopted niece, Mrs. Laura Cushing, mourns him also as much as though he was a blood relative.

Mr. Brown and his brother came to this county in 1871 and settled in Pleasant township where they lived a number of years and acquired considerable property. About fifteen years ago they purchased the present homestead in this township, and have lived there continuously ever since. Mr. Brown was much respected by his neighbors and friends. He came of old New England Puritan stock, and his sense of honor and straight dealing was consistent with his descent. His word was as good as his bond, and no man doubted it or called in question the integrity of his character.

It is to such men the new and mighty West holds its strength; its commercial energy; its love of freedom; its loyality to established government. Mr. Brown was borne to his last resting place by old citizens in high standing who were his warm personal friends. He has been in poor health for the past two years. The last time he was in Avoca he cast his ballot at the presidential election. Even at that time he was in feeble health and had to be assisted up the steps of the court house by his brother. His end came peacefully and without pain. He bore sickness patiently, uttering no word of complaints, and passed away as one falls into sleep, full of years and honor.

The community extends to his brother and to Mrs. Cushing, its sympathy and assures them that such lives are not forgottten or lived in vain.
