Storey county death record: William F. Grant, native of Nova Scotia, aged 28, died (or buried) 4 July 1882, place of death: Virginia [City], cause of death: Accident in Combination shaft.

" Mining Accident.
"Crushed to Death in the Chollar-Norcross-Savage Shaft.
"Last Tuesday morning, about 5:30 o'clock, William F. Grant, the pumpman at the Chollar-Norcross-Savage shaft, met with an accident which resulted in his death at 2 o'clock in the afternoon. The Enterprise gives these particulars: Mr. Grant, with others, was coming up the shaft on a cage when he fainted, as is supposed, and, falling, was caught between the cage and wall plates. [Injuries described.] The cage was stopped as soon as possible and the wounded man extricated and brought to the surface, where he had prompt medical attendance. It was seen from the first, however, that he could not survive, [injury details]. Mr. Grant was a young man, 28 years of age, and had been married but two months. He was taken to his home on North A street, and the sight of him in his mangled condition was a terrible shock to the young wife, whom he had left but a short time before, going forth in perfect health and strength. His funeral took place this afternoon." [Reno Evening Gazette, Thursday, 6 July 1882.]

[Rickards original data, including an "exact" birth date and an incorrect death date, has been replaced with these fact-based ones. The incorrect information may still be indexed in places such as Ancestry and FamilySearch, as may a photo of an unidentified man attached as "William". If you have attached anything to your tree, please verify its validity.]
