WORCESTER -- Irene W. (Anttila) Ackley, 86, of Worcester and Paxton, an office manager and World War II nurse, died Monday, May 5, 2003 in Christopher House of Worcester. Her husband of 64 years, Edward R. Ackley, died in May of 2002. She left many nieces; nephews; grandnephews and grandnieces, including Marjorie W. Clark of Worcester. Four brothers, George, William, Andrew, and Walter Anttila; and five sisters, Eva Valk, Alma Kemp, Ina Holm, Olive Wennerlof and Ethel Sykes, predeceased her. She was born in Spencer, the daughter of Antti and Helviki S. (Hakola) Anttila. She graduated from Commerce High School in 1936, and from the Worcester Art Museum. Mrs. Ackley was an office manager for Phalo Plastics in Worcester for many years. She was a nurse in the Red Cross during World War II. She volunteered for the Red Cross and at local hospitals. She was a member of the First Congregational Church and the Woman's Club, both of Paxton. She taught oil painting for 35 years, and enjoyed traveling and her pets. A private graveside service in Worcester County Memorial Park was held at the convenience of the family. Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden (www.milesfuneralhome.com) was in charge of arrangements.
