ST. CHARLES-- the funeral for Carl J. Benedett will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Bera Moravian Church in rural St. Charles, with the Rev. Keith Harke officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mr. Benedett, 91, of St. Charles, a retired farmer and apartment manager, died Wednesday (Nov. 3, 1999) at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester.
Born July 24, 1908, in Utica Township, Winona County, he moved to a farm in elba Township with his parents when he was 5, grew there and attended grade school at Gainey (gold mine) School, now the Red Schoolhouse at the Winona County Fairgrounds. In the early 1930s, he bought and operated the St. Charles Feed Mill on Richland Avenue. From February 1943 to November 1945, he served in the Army Medical Corps with duty in New Caledonia, Guadalcanal and Guam. On July 3, 1943, he married Marguerite Alice Michel at the return from the service, they lived in the home of his parents in St. Charles. Mr. Benedett sold the mill and farmed with his brothers for several years, and then bought the former Baker and Clark farms east of St. Charles. He grain farmed with his son for a time and then rented out the land. He owned and managed the former Rainier Hotel-Apartments in St Charles from 1947 to 1990 and also the Mill Apartments. He retired from farming in 1982.
He was a member of Berea Moravian Church and served on its boards several times. During the 1930s and early 1940s, he and his brothers had a quartet and sang at many funerals and public gatherings. He was a member of VFW Post 5630 in Charles and delivered Meals on Wheels for several years.
Survivors include his wife; a son, John of St. Charles; a daughter, the Rev. Teresa Benedett-Farmer (Mrs. Larry) of Denver; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Hoff Funeral Homes- St. Charles Chapel and an hour before the service Saturday at the church. There will be a prayer service at 7:45 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
