WILLIAM HOBART CRABTREE
Oct. 3, 1936 - Sept. 25, 2010

BIG STONE GAP, Va. — William Hobart Crabtree, 73, passed away on Saturday (Sept. 25, 2010) at Lonesome Pine Hospital.

He was born on Oct. 3, 1936, in Scioto County, Ohio, to Clarence and Osa Crabtree. He joined the U.S. Air Force at the age of 19, receiving an honorable discharge after four years of service.

He married his high school sweetheart in 1960 and they eventually ended up in Big Stone Gap, Va., where they raised their four sons. Hobart was employed by the FAA, working at the radar tower on Black Mountain as an Electronics Technician.

He retired after 33 years of service. Hobart was a target shooter, winning several awards for his sharp shooting skill. He was active in the Boy Scouts for several years. In the early 70's Hobart began playing the banjo. He became an active volunteer in the Lonesome Pine Outdoor Drama from 1980 – 1994, both on stage and behind the scenes. It was his time in the Drama that led him to becoming more comfortable as an entertainer. Hobart was famous for his claw hammer style of banjo playing. Probably his most proud moments come from teaching eager students banjo music at Mountain Empire Community College (MECC). Hobart also recorded seven albums before his health took a turn for the worse in 2004.

During his struggle with dementia, a two-disc collection of his music was produced and sold. A portion of the proceeds from it benefits a scholarship for music students at MECC.

Hobart was preceded in death by his father; mother; a son (Douglas); and a brother (Roger).

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Shirley K. Throckmorton Crabtree; his sons and daughters-in-law, Gregory Crabtree of Albuquerque, N.Mex., Stephen and Beverley Crabtree of East Stone Gap, Va.; Anthony and Lydia Crabtree of Cartersville, Ga.; his brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Juanita Crabtree of Yuma, Ark.; grandchildren, Brian (and Patricia) Crabtree, Amber Crabtree, Sam Lee; and great-grandson, Xane Crabtree.

Visitation will be on Monday at the Trinity UMC (Wyandotte Ave, E. and E. 1st St., S.) in Big Stone Gap from 5 to 7 p.m., with the funeral immediately following with the Rev. Ronnie Mutter and Dr. Kenneth LaDuke officiating.

Burial will be at 12 noon on Tuesday at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens, with family and friends gathering at the church at 11:30 a.m. for the procession.

Pallbearers will be Steve Crabtree, Tony Crabtree, Brian Crabtree, Don Ferrell, Ron Kennedy, Sam Lee and Jimmy Mullins.

Holding Funeral Home is serving the Crabtree family.
