'Papa John' was born in Seale, Alabama to John Anderson and Nancy Elizabeth BUSH Arrant. He married Mary Elizabeth Thigpen in 1907 at Uchee, Alabama. Their union produced three sons and two daughters.

In addition to being a city of Homestead police officer, he farmed avocados and Key limes in Homestead, Florida.
Tragedy struck his life December 7, 1941, when his beloved son, Anderson, was killed aboard the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor.

He was killed in an auto accident, when ironically, a semi loaded with avocados broadsided his pickup.
