Hungarian General and Hero of the Hungarian Holocaust. In July 1944, Col. Koszorús mobilized his First Armored Division to block a Nazi coup in the Hungarian capital of Budapest, thereby preventing some 250,000 Jews from being deported from Budapest to Nazi death camps. This was the only instance of an Axis power using the military to prevent Jewish deportations. His actions allowed Raoul Wallenberg to carry out his successful rescue mission. After the Germans gained control of Hungary 3 1/2 months later, Koszorús fled to avoid the Gestapo, eventually ending up in the United States with his family in 1951. In the US, Koszorús worked for the U.S. Topographic Command. The late congressman Tom Lantos entered a statement on Koszorús into the Congressional Record of May 26, 1994, dubbing him "A Hero of the Hungarian Holocaust." After Koszorús' death, and following the demise of communism, he was promoted to the rank of general by then Hungarian Prime Minister József Antall.
