CAROLINE WANDLING, 93

Funeral services for Caroline A. Wandling, 93, Marion, formerly a long time Marengo resident, were held Saturday, Aug 10, at First United Methodist Church, Marengo. She died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following a brief illness. The Rev. Russ Burnett officiated at the service. Burial was in the Marengo Cemetery. Pallbearers were Harlan and Myron Heitman, both Williamsburg; Wayne Imhoff, Cedar Rapids, all nephews of the deceased; Ron Shaull and Allen Koenig, both Marengo, and Ken Hook, Solon. Honorary pallbearers were Fred Koenig, Alex Koenig and Bob Olson, all Marengo; Jim Freeze, Thornburg and David Gott, South Amana. Memorials may be made to Trinity Methodist Church, Cedar Rapids, or First United Methodist Church, Marengo. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, was in charge of arrangements. Caroline Alice Wandling was born March 26, 1909, on a farm west of Williamsburg, the fourth of nine children born to Axel and Minnie Klever Fant. She received her early formal education and church instruction at the Pilot Grove School and church. She was employed in Marengo when she met her future husband, Clarence Wandling. They were married in Marengo June 19, 1929, and called the town home for over 60 years. Born into this union were two daughters, Dorothy and Janet, and one son, Larry. Caroline was active in Marengo's early women's clubs. She was a past president of Ingleside Club and a charter member and past president of the Book and Craft Club. In 1967, she was voted Clubwoman of the Year by her Ingleside Club membership. This honor was based upon her service as president of the Ladies Aid Society, Camp Fire Girls leadership, church activities and charitable work with UNICEF and the Cancer Fund. She was an officer of the Women's Federated Club and also served 15 years on the Marengo Library Board. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Marengo, for over 70 years where she taught Sunday school, Bible school, sang in the choir and worked with the Women of the Methodist Church. She belonged to Marengo's Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and it's Past Matrons Circle. She was particularly proud of her role as Iowa County's Christmas Seal chairperson during several annual charity fund drives and in the fact they always met their goals. A devoted lifetime Republican, she held many local and county offices in support of the party's candidates. In recent years, she was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Marengo. For 11 years, she owned and operated the Wandling Paint and Wallpaper store on the northeast side of the square. Shortly following Clarence's retirement from Amana Refrigeration Incorporated, the couple moved to Oceanside, Calif., where they resided for approximately 15 years. Their desire to be close to family and old friends again led to their move back to Marengo. Following Clarence's death, she moved into a retirement home in Marion where she resided until her death. Caroline's family and many friends will miss her deeply.

Wandling is survived by one son and his wife, Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Larry and Vivian Wandling, Shalimar, Fla.; their children and spouses, Laurie and Dr. Bryan Livengood, Longmont, Colo., and Lisa Wandling, Pinebrook, N.J.; one son-in-law, James McClymond, San Diego, Calif.; one grandson, Dr. Michael McClymond, St. Louis, Mo., and granddaughter and her husband, Kelley and Adrian Laekas, San Franscisco, Calif.; one great-granddaughter, Sarah McClymond, Atlanta, GA., and three sisters, Ruth Imhoff, Elvena Hopp and Dorothy Plagmann. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Clarence, in 1992; her older daughter, Dorothy, in 1946; her younger daughter, Janet McClymond, in 2001; her parents; three brothers, Carl, Adolph and John, and two sisters, Mary Fant and Anna Heitman.
