Son of Joseph Hertel (died before the 1900 census) and Margaeretha Lucas (born Dec 1843), grandson of Christian Lucas (born May 1812 Germany); brother of John Hertel (born Jan 1869 WI), Marie Hertel (born Apr 1878 WI), Lena Hertel (born Apr 1882 WI), Cara Hertel (born Aug 1883 WI), Henry Hertel (born Nov 1884 WI) and Frank Hertel (born Jun 1887 WI). In the 1920 Tonopah census Clemens and Marion have a son Clemens Jr, born in NV 2 months old, based on the enumeration of the census he was born about Nov 1919.

From his WWI draft registration card dated 1 Sep 1918 he was working for Hall Liquor Company on Main Street in Tonopah bottling soda water. He states he is tall, slender has blue eyes and light hair.

9 Oct 1949 Marion Margaret Hertel, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs Clemens Hertel Sr, married Mr. Santos at St Patrick's Church in Tonopah. The reception was at the family home on Florence Avenue in Tonopah. The couple will make their home in San Francisco. Her brothers Clemens and Peter were part of the ceremony.

" Word has been received here on the death of Clemens Hertel, native Sheboygan, at Tonopah, NV on Saturday. Mr. Hertel had been in ill health for some time.
Mr. Hertel was born in Sheboygan Jan 16, 1880, the son of Joseph and Margaret Hertel. He attended local schools and was married here to Miss Marion Larcelles (marriage license was taken out 27 Nov 1917). The couple located in Tonopah, NV and spent their entire married life there.
Besides his widow, Mr. Hertel is survived by a sister, Mrs. Clara Wolf of Hartford, WI, who presently is staying here with a daughter, Mrs. Jack Rammer, 512 Wisconsin Ave."

"Tonopah - Funeral services for Clemens W. Hertel, 76, longtime Tonopah resident who died at a local hospital July 14, were held from St. Patrick's Catholic Church on Tuesday morning July 17.
Mr. Hertel, a resident of Tonopah since 1906, was a native of Sheboygan, Wis. For many years he operated a soda water manufacturing and wholesale business here but was forced to retire several years ago because of ill health. Mr. Hertel was a member of the Tonopah Elks Lodge, which he joined in 1909.
Surviving are his widow, Marion; three sons, Clem Hertel Jr. of Tonopah, Joh Hertel, a serviceman stationed at St Paul Island, Alaska and Peter Hertel of Sacramento, Calif., a daughter, Mrs. Marion Santos of Redwood City, CAlif., and two sisters, Mrs. Marie Regnor of San Diego, Calif., and Mrs. Clara Wolfe of Hartford, Wisc."
