The son of the late James Lawrence and Pearl L. (Hacker) Owens, he was born Sept. 13, 1922, in Morgan County. He was the widower of Juanita R. "Dude" (Brummett) Owens, whom he married Feb. 25, 1941. She died Dec. 24, 2001.
Owens was a self-employed machinist, retiring in 1988. He was owner/operator of Owens & Sons Machine Shop in Martinsville for several years. He was also known as a "Jack of all Trades."
He was a member of Zion's Hill Baptist Church, Martinsville; American Legion Post 230; V.F.W. Post 1127; Masonic Lodge 74 F &AM; Scottish Rite and York Rite.
He attended a one room school in Morgan County, Hazel Patch School, until eighth grade.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the United States Army as a PFC in the 116th Infantry Co. M, in Normandy, Northern France and Rhineland.
He enjoyed horseback riding, motorcycles, gardening, fishing, hunting and country music.
Survivors include sons, Lloyd Owens of Martinsville, Roy "Jay" Owens of Greenwood, Ronnie Owens of Martinsville and Max Owens of Indianapolis; daughter, Delphine "Dee" Godsey of Martinsville; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Harry, James Robert and William Owens and sisters, Flossie Neidigh, Edna Granholt and Lena Barger.
