Boston Mayor. For over a decade, he was one of the most profiled leaders from a major American city. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as the mayor of Boston, Massachusetts from 1968 to 1984. The son of Irish-Catholic parents, he was born into a politically-versed family as both of his grandfathers were presidents of Boston's City Council. He received his bachelor of arts degree from Williams College and earned his law degree from the Boston College Law School. White was successful in his first effort to seek public office, when he was elected as the secretary of state for Massachusetts in 1960. In 1967 he was elected mayor of Boston and during his tenure, he made the revitalization of the downtown Boston-area a priority in order to attract more tourism. His administration endured a turbulent period, when busing was mandated by the federal courts causing a rift within the city's population. After leaving office, White served as director of the Institute for Political Communication at Boston College. He died of complications from Alzheimer's disease.
