She was born on March 9, 1927, in Erie, Penn., to John Fredric and Althea Amanda (Pray) Graney. She had a younger sister Marjorie.
Awanda and Marjorie were raised by their maternal grandparents, Allen and Grace Foote. Awanda graduated from Millcreek High School in Erie, and moved with her family to Denver in 1945. She attended the University of Denver, then worked for Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph.
There she met Donald M. Smith, and they were married in June 1948. They had three children, Stephanie (Margheim), Douglas and Curtis. The marriage ended in 1959.
In 1960, she met and later married Samuel Ausborn Ballard IV of Douglas. That year, they had a daughter Rebecca (Plumb). They lived in Denver, Steamboat Springs, Oak Creek, Montrose, and Mancos, Colo., before moving to Sam's home town of Douglas in 1978.
Awanda enjoyed gardening and oil painting. She and Sam enjoyed traveling, golf, bowling, their friends and their many trips together.
She is survived by her husband and children; 10 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. Awanda was very caring and devoted to her family.
Interment will be in Douglas Park Cemetery.
