Rufus was raised on a farm. In his early 20's, he was appointed principal of several schools in Blount Co. AL. He was a man of great wit, humor, kind and a lover of sacred music.
The family moved to Birmingham, Jefferson, Al in 1893. In 1895, he went into the cotton business as local weigher of the Birmingham District and continued for 18 years, also in surrounding counties. He was very successful and gained the confidence of brokers and farmers.
