Before 1875 Thomas worked as a collector, lamp maker, gas fitter, Post Office clerk and a plumber, but from 1875 to 1890 he was a Customs Clerk for the U.S. Government, and in 1891-92 was the Chief Clerk and in 1893 Special Deputy Surveyor of Customs at the Customs House in Philadelphia. He was married to Mary Jane Lawrence about 1853.
