The Rev. Ubaldo M. Fior, Our Lady of Fatima Shrine Barnabite priest, died Saturday in Mount St. Mary's Hospital. He was 79.
Born in Castelfranco Veneto, Treviso, Italy, Father Fior studied theology at the Barnabite Seminary in Rome and was ordained there on March 24, 1951.
He was then sent to Chile, where he served Barnabite schools and parishes.
In 1957, Father Fior began his first stay in North America, arriving in Buffalo to study English and serve as a chaplain at Sisters Hospital. Later, he was transferred to Fermin La Suen Catholic High School in San Pedro, Calif.
In 1960, he returned to Chile, where he again served in Barnabite high schools and the seminary. Father Fior remained in Chile until 1973 except for 21/2 years when he was provincial delegate in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Father Fior made a permanent transition to the North American Province in March 1973. After studying Portuguese in Fatima, Portugal, he was assigned to St. James Parish in Oakville, Ont., ministering to those of Portuguese heritage, and was the associate pastor there until 1977.
He was pastor of Our Lady of the Assumption Parish in Elfrida, Ont., from 1985 to 1989 and then was assigned to the National Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Fatima.
Until his illness, Father Fior ministered to the pastoral needs of the many pilgrims who visit the shrine. He was especially known for his willingness to hear the confessions of the many who sought absolution and counsel in the sacrament. From 1991 until October of 2001, Father Fior was also the pastor of Holy Family Parish on the Tuscarora Reservation.
Surviving are three brothers, Bartolomeo, Pietro and Riccardo, and a sister, Mirella.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Basilica of Our Lady of Fatima Shrine, 1023 Swann Road.
