Obituary:
Howard Rayford "Curly" Hammitt, 86, of Elk Point, passed away suddenly on Friday, January 27, 2012 at his residence.

Curly was born on February 16, 1925 in Alcester, SD, to DeeCort and Bessie (Durkee) Hammitt. He graduated from Alcester High School in 1943 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy for three years as a radioman. After his time in the service, Curly spent more than 60 years operating service stations, one in Alcester and two in Elk Point.

On September 9, 1949, Curly married the love of his life, Dorothy Twedt in Alcester, SD, where they lived for three more years before moving to Elk Point.

Curly was an active member of the community. He participated in the American Legion, V.F.W., Masons, and the Elk Point Country Club. He was an avid sports fan and supported all of the local teams. He was a dedicated golfer and was on the course everyday that it was open and the weather was fair. He was also known as the man to go to when you needed something fixed.

Curly is survived by his children, Mark Hammitt of Yankton, SD, Laura (Ron) Baker of Sioux Falls, SD, Jane (Steve) Allard of Elk Point, SD, Kurt (Ann) Hammitt of Elk Point, SD, and Paul (Louise) Hammitt of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; his grandchildren, Heidi (Lance) Edwards, Carly Baker, Mikale Baker, Ben Baker, Marni (Rob) Law, Alissa Allard, Blake (Leslie) Allard, Nick (Erin) Hammitt, Matt (Ericka) Hammitt, Molly Hammitt, Derek Hammitt, and Paula (Ben) Sass; 14 great-grandchildren; and his brother, Douglas (Marene) Hammitt.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy (Twedt) Hammitt; his parents, DeeCort and Bessie Hammitt; three sisters, and six brothers; one grandson, Cory Hammitt.

Visitation:
5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at United Parish 603 South Pearl Street Elk Point South Dakota 57025

Service:

Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at United Parish with Rev. David Bambas officiating.

Cemetery:

Burial will be at Elk Point Cemetery, Elk Point South Dakota 57025, with military honors conducted by American Legion Post #134 and V.F.W. Post #915.
