When Jesse Tilden Davis was born on November 21, 1876, in Statesville, North Carolina, his father, John, was 25 and his mother, Mary, was 21. In 1880, Jesse T. Davis was 3 years old and lived in Deep River, North Carolina with his father, mother, brother, and sister. In 1900, Jesse Davis was 23 years old and lived in Reedy Creek, North Carolina with his father, mother, 3 brothers, and 2 sisters. He is listed on his registration card as short, blue eyes and dark hair. He moved to Statesville, NC in 1903. He married Lula Gaither of Litchfield, Ill. on 10-25-1905. They had 5 boys and one girl. Their 5th child died at age 3 months. Never afraid of work his working career, until age 80, included working at a chair factory, insurance sales, dairyman, farmer, delivered 2,000 water & light bills to 2,000 Statesville homes and organized a merchant cooperative delivery service which his son Roby took over. He gave up his car and driving at age 79 because he didn't like how costly the insurance had become. He got his middle name from presidential candidate Samuel Tilden who lost to Ruthford Hayes. In their later years both Jesse and Lula lived with their daughter, Jessie Hardy in Raleigh, NC. He died at age 93 of a heart attack but also had battled diabetes, prostate cancer and having his bladder removed. He is buried in the family plot at Oakwood Cemetery in Statesville, NC.
