Memories of a student:
Dear Bishop Jarrell, I was a student at St. Michael Elementary School in Crowley, 1966-1971, and then at Notre Dame through 1975. My mother, Elsie Rowell, taught 4th grade at St. Michael for several years. She still serves the school as a substitute teacher and she and my father Tom are active members of the church. One of the most influential people in my spiritual life was my 7th/8th grade teacher Sister Eucharista. She reflected Jesus in her whole energetic body and soul. She provided opportunities for me and my classmates to serve as leaders in the planning of the music and liturgy of the Mass. She had a gift for appreciating and harvesting the talents of her students for the purpose of glorifying God. The reason I write today is that her infectious enthusiasm still touches my life today. I teach 3rd grade PSR and am a Eucharistic minister; and my 19 year old daughter is a Eucharistic minister and still enjoys being an altar server in our parish of St. Jude the Apostle in Baton Rouge. I will always love Sister Eucharista and I often think of her. I'd like to be able to honor her on the date of her birth or death and perhaps visit her grave site.I believe you and she were at St. Michael at the same time. The last I heard of her, she died of cancer as Sister Joan. I don't know her last name so I am unable to find her obituary on the internet. Can you please forward her obituary to me, or forward this email to someone who might have access to this information?Thank you and may God continue to bless you in your life and service to the Diocese of Lafayette.
Rene Rowell Torregrossa

Dear Ms. Torregrossa:
I gave Bishop Jarrell your message and he said that he did remember Sister Joan Bergeron (Sister Eucharista). She died of a stroke on March 8, 1985. He recalls that she was buried in Elton. I asked our Archives to see if they could find any information about her death, i.e. obituary, etc. In the newsletter sent to the Religious Brothers and Sisters by the Director at that time and under the request to remember those who have died, it stated that she chose to donate her body for Science Research and the Memorial Mass took place on Monday, March 11, 1985 at Fatima Church, Lafayette.I will provide the contact information for Our Lady of Fatima Church in Lafayette. There are two churches in Elton. Elton is a part of the Diocese of Lake Charles.
I pray that this information is helpful to you.
