Civil War Union Army Officer. He was a graduate of Rutgers College in 1858. He then took up law and was admitted to the bar as an attorney in June 1861. He then enlisted and raised Company C, 13th NJ Volunteers and was commissioned Captain on August 25, 1862. His regiment was attached to the 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, 12th Army Corps. He was then detailed as judge advocate of court martial of the 1st Division, 12th Army Corps in Tennessee and also judge advocate of a military commission during the winter of 1863 to 1864. He fought in the battles of South Mountain, Antietam, Chancellorville, Gettysburg of which he was wounded. His other battles included Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca, Cassville, Dallas, Pine Knob, Kulp's Farm, Kenesaw Mountain, He was promoted to Major on April 5, 1864 when Major Beardlsey resigned. He then resigned on July 16, 1864 and was brevetted lieutenant colonel and then colonel on March 13, 1865 for gallant and meritorious services during the civil war. He was the son of Major Peter M. Ryerson and brother of 1st Lieutenant Peter M. Ryerson, Jr.
