He graduated from the United States Military Academy in the Class of 1908. He saw service in the Mexican Punitive Expedition 1916 and the World War 1917-18. He was Aide-de-camp to General Leonard Wood in 1917. As a Major, Sumner M. Williams commanded the 1st Machine Gun Squadron at Fort Clark, Texas, 1926-1928.
