Winifred Ruth White Blodgett
1919 - 2008

Life-long valley resident, Winifred Ruth White Blodgett, died Nov. 15. 2008, just one week before her 89th birthday. Born Nov. 22, 1919, Winifred, also known as Pud, was raised in Conner and attended school in Darby. Following her graduation from Darby High School in 1937, Winifred attended nursing school at St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula. Shortly after her two years at St. Patrick, Winifred met Don Blodgett. After dating for about a year, Don and Winifred were married at Don's parents; home in Hamilton on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27, 1941. Winifred's focus during the next years was her children. Lynda, Rita, Mark, Steve, David, Jan and Susan were raised by a fun-loving, musical and creative mother who enjoyed swimming, hiking, floating down the Bitterroot, cooking, reading, dancing, painting and singing harmony.

Winifred taught her children to attend church and, although raised a Presbyterian, joined and participated in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for more than 60 years. She worked at the Bitterroot Clinic for many years enjoying using her medical training. Winifred was involved in many service oriented activities and was honored in 2006 as "Montana Volunteer of the Year" for more than 50 years of volunteer work at Valley View Estates. Winifred loved to perform and especially enjoyed singing with the Singing Mothers, Sweet Adeline's, the Grammaphones and the Valley Singers. Tap dancing was a talent Winifred often shared to the delight of many. She also loved to send her many friends and family members birthday cards...a more thoughtful and giving person would be hard to find.

Winifred's husband Don preceded her in death as did two of her children, Mark and Rita, and her daughter-in-law, Gail.

She is survived by her daughters Lynda (Larry) Benson, Jan (Peter) Pfeifer, and Susan (Scott) Smith; and by her sons, Steve (Virginia) Blodgett and David Blodgett. Winifred is also survived by 29 grandchildren and 63 great-grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday, Nov. 22 at noon at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Chapel located at 401 N. Eighth St. in Hamilton. The viewing will be from 10-11:30 a.m. Arrangements are under the care of the Daly-Leach Chapel in Hamilton.
