Robert Campbell Eure, 50, died of a heart attack on Tuesday, October 4, 2005 in Cairo, Egypt. An accomplished journalist, Rob spent some 11 years covering the General Assembly and Virginia politics for The Roanoke Times and the (Norfolk) Virginian-Pilot and Ledger-Star. His home since 1994, Portland, Ore., where he was a staff writer for the Portland Oregonian, and then for The Wall Street Journal's Northwest Bureau. He began his reporting career at the weekly Culpeper News, and then worked as a reporter and editorial page editor of The Charlottesville Daily Progress. Beginning in 2002, Rob taught the principles and practices of ethical journalism and a free and responsible press to reporters and editors in places with little tradition of freedom of the press. He served extended tours in Afghanistan (twice), Georgia, Slovakia, and Ghana. He was particularly proud of having helped Afghani journalists develop the first independent news agency in that country, and he grew to love Afghanistan and its people. He was a Knight International Press Fellow and a Fellow of the International Center for Journalists. Since July, Rob had been conducting election coverage training in conjunction with Egypt's recent presidential election. Rob was born in Roanoke on November 6, 1954, a son of John W. Eure and the late Virginia Caroline Dickens Eure. In addition to his father, Rob is survived by his wife, M. Deane Bradshaw Eure; and daughter, Addie Taylor Eure of Portland, Ore.; Rob was a graduate of the University of Virginia and of Patrick Henry High School, where he was copresident of the senior class.
