"An era has ended, our Quiet Man has passed..."

Early morning of Jan. 24, 2012, surrounded by his dear family, Charles Joseph Gallardo slipped quietly away.

Charles and his twin, Charlotte, were born on July 30, 1931, in the little coastal village of La Conchita, near Ventura. He attended the now historic one-room schoolhouse, Punta Gorda, from kindergarten through sixth grade. While attending Cabrillo Junior High, he met his lifelong sweetheart, Nancy Greene (Gallardo).

Throughout his Ventura High School and Ventura Junior College years, he advanced athletically and scholastically. With his attitude of openness and inclusiveness, he gathered friends that lasted a lifetime. At Ventura College, he earned Athlete of the Year honors two years in a row, a rare feat. He loved sports and spent years coaching in his community, in Little League and Babe Ruth baseball, Pop Warner football, VYBA, and Indian Guides.

He was well-known as not only an outstanding coach but a teacher of life skills as well. Out of high school, Charles and Nancy became trailblazers, by marrying, combining their two cultures, and starting a family.

He began employment at Prosser's Bakery on the Avenue, moved on to Greene's Lawnmower Service (father-in-law's business), then the County of Ventura's Landscape and Maintenance Department. He eventually transferred to Fleet Services where his creative trouble-shooting kept the County's vehicles running. Charles also taught small engine repair at Oxnard College, in English and Spanish.

Once retired and with his dear Nancy gone, Charles became a formidable opponent on the golf course, his new love. He so enjoyed his golf buddies at Soule Park, Saticoy, and Santa Paula courses. He was a faithful attendee at the Wednesday "old man" lunches, and enjoyed his many family gatherings at "The House."

Charles leaves behind his children, Linda Shepner, Laura Gallardo (Gregory Reide), Lawrence Gallardo (Susan Gallardo), and Gary Gallardo; his sisters, Charlotte Zavala, Virginia Ayala, MaryLou Dellinger, Joni Goena, and Jackie Goena; his grandchildren, Ryan Lopez, Robert Shepner, Molli Thomason, Erik Shepner, and Tyhler Gallardo; and his great-grandchildren, Tessa Lopez and Scotland Thomason. Charles also leaves behind his brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Bobbi Greene, and their families; uncles, Thomas and Ted Gallardo; and aunt, Marilyn Bishop.

The family wishes to acknowledge with deep appreciation the loving, competent care provided by Tyhler's mother, Karie Kohn, and Alex Graham's companionship. Although quiet, Charles certainly wasn't a man without humor! So in Charles' quiet way of saying the end, we will say it for him, "I'm doneD - U - N."

The funeral mass will be celebrated at 12 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 3175 Telegraph Rd., Ventura. Channel Islands, Cremations, A Heritage Life Tribute Center, Ventura, is assisting the family with the arrangements, 240-1359.
