George L. Heikes was the son of Jacob and Catherine Heikes; one of many children, as reflected on the 1850 U.S. census. George enlisted in the Union Army on 23 September, 1861 as a Private in Company C of the 1st Ohio Infantry Regiment. Private George L. Heikes was wounded on Monday, 7 April 1862, the second day of what would later be called the Battle of Shilo. George died as a result of his wounds, twenty-two days later, on 29 April, 1862, at the Jefferson Barracks military hospital, just south of St Louis, Missouri.

Confederate losses at Shilo were reported as: 1,728 killed, 8,012 wounded and 959 missin or captured

The Union Army's losses at Shiloh were: 1,754 killed, 8,408 wounded and 2,885 missing or captured.
