Obituary of William H. Conley
Willian H. Conley, the only son of Spencer and Sarah Conley and the oldest child of the family of six children, was born in North Carolina on Dec. 16, 1845, and died on Sunday morning, June 1, 1930, being at the time of his death 84 years 5 months and 15 days old.
He, with his parents, came to Missouri in his early childhood. He grew to manhood in Linn's Mill vicinity, and on December 22, 1870, he was united in marriage to Mildred Giles of the same vicinity. To this union, eight children were born—Dolly, who married S. J. Richardson; Robert, David, Annie, and Gertrude preceded their father in death, while Joseph Pleas, Charles Otho, and Willie Mae, wife of Albert Schaper, with the wife of nearly sixty years live to mourn the death of the faithful father and devoted husband. Besides these, there are 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren who are saddened by the death of this good man.
"Uncle Billie," as we all called him, joined the Christian church at Hawk Point nearly 60 years ago under the preaching of Rev. Jackman, who is remembered only by us older folks. Bro. Conley was devoted to his church and family, and all loved him. He was a kind man and fair in all his dealings with his fellowmen. He had been in poor health for some time, and he was tenderly cared for by his faithful wife, children, and friends. It was our good fortune to know Uncle Billie intimately, and we knew him to be one of our best men. We, as well as all who knew him, feel that we have lost a good friend and that a good man has gone to his reward.
His funeral was at the Hawk Point Church Monday, June 2, and was attended y a large gathering of relatives and friends. Rev. O. A. Gordon delivered a most touching sermon, after which his remains were laid to rest in Hawk Point cemetery. May we all be prepared to go as was he.
