One of the U.S. Navy’s “Golden 13,” the first African American commissioned officers. Illinois Juvenile Court Justice. He earned his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Chicago in 1935 and 1937, respectively. He enlisted in the navy in October 1943, and received his commission as an Ensign in February of 1944. Following the war, he was honorably discharged and returned to the legal profession in Chicago. He won Judge of the Year honors from the Cook County (Illinois) Bar Association in 1972, and ultimately received appointment as an Illinois Juvenile Court Justice in 1990.
